A few weeks ago, my hubby noticed a guy in the street taking pictures of our house. He promptly went out to see what was going on, and the man told him he used to live in our house. It turns out that he grew up in this house until he was 25, from the 1940's into the 1960's! He lives in Chicago now, but was back visiting Ohio, and wanted to stop by and see his old stomping ground, and simply take a few pictures of the outside. We invited him in, and he was nearly overcome with tears. It was so interesting to hear all of his stories, and the changes that have been made to the house and yard, etc. I asked him to please email us pictures when he returned home. I'll get back to that in a minute...
This is our 'office', right off the front hall/entryway.
In here, I decided to go with more of an industrial vibe. The walls were painted red when we moved in, and we left them, so they just seemed to lean toward a more industrial look.

oh my gosh, that's so cool! I love her pants too! It was very sweet of you to invite him inside, I know how much that can mean to a person. When I was married to my ex-husband I did some genealogy for his dad's side of the family which he knew nothing about. I found the place where his dad had grown up and I was invited inside too, it was a very nice gesture.

I actually like the pop of red in your office with the black and industrial items, but also understand when it's time for a change. This is such a neat story! When we tore down a wall that covered a fireplace we found a note tacked to the wall that said "This was a good home" and it was signed by the homeowners son who sold it to us. I framed it because I couldn't agree more.

The 85 year old son of the builder of the Queen Anne farmhouse we lived in in NC came by our house and told us all about growing up there and then brought us a photo of it from back in the early 1900's. I remember when I was young we did not use my parents living room very much either! It was not really to "live in " ha ha. Tv watching was either in my mom's bedroom or later in the 'gameroom' downstairs. Playing with toys was always in our bedrooms ...

I so love this post because the house my dad built and that I grew up in here in South Florida, and which I lived in from the time I was three until I was 20 is up for sale again. It has been so changed and updated that I feel the soul has been removed from it. I love that you still have the bookcases and the bones left from when the gentleman lived there. My dad once took us back to our old house in MI on a summer vacation and knocked on the door and asked if we could come in and see it. The people obliged and it was so cool to see where we had lived when I was born. Thanks for sharing this and for opening your home to the past. I am in love with that photo. Amazing that he had it.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great Story about the Man who used to live in the House coming for a visit & Sharing Images of how it was back in the day... especially since you have a Passion for Vintage Era objects & Styling! I Love this Room, and I actually like the Bold Red Wall. We purchased a Historic Home which is nearly 100 years old & has a lot of local History, so Interesting to find out more about it as folks Share and we get a sense of it's Essence and those who once lived in and Loved it too. Part of our Rooms were painted a Bold Pumpkin & we decided to leave them... the G-Kids Bedroom is still in that shade and they adore the color... because in the Evening it glows like the inside of a Jack-O-Lantern and they think that's pretty Cool. The exterior trim is in even Bolder Caribbean Blue & Turquoise {since the house itself is Rock & Railroad Ties} and we decided to keep those original colors as well... kinda grew on us & now we wouldn't Imagine it any other colors.

Hi Susan, wow I love the office. I think the red walls are wonderful, but then I love red. I know sometimes you are ready for a change. You have a fabulous collection and I would love to see some more close up pics. The old photo is a treasure. So fun to have him stop by and sweet of you to invite him in. I know that I would love to go back into the house that I grew up in. I always think of that song, "The House That Built Me", by Amanda Lambert. I lived in it my entire life until I left for college. ReplyDeleteI do think the grey would be lovely on the walls. There are so many fun and interesting things to like in your rooms! That is awesome you have some history on your house! We found a letter in the attic of this house. It was written by the Great Granddaughter of the people that had lived here years ago. A couple owned the house between the grandparents and us, but the couple didn't do anything to the house except trash it and let it go to foreclosure. The letter is a true gem. The lady that lived here came to The States on the sister ship of the Lusitania. The internet being the wonderful place it is, I found the Great Granddaughter on Facebook. We have shared some stories. It is so neat. Abby and her family have an open invitation if they are ever back this way. Oh how fun!!!
