Office Space
A few weeks ago, my hubby noticed a guy in the street taking pictures of our house. He promptly went out to see what was going on, and the man told him he used to live in our house. It turns out that he grew up in this house until he was 25, from the 1940's into the 1960's! He lives in Chicago now, but was back visiting Ohio, and wanted to stop by and see his old stomping ground, and simply take a few pictures of the outside. We invited him in, and he was nearly overcome with tears. It was so interesting to hear all of his stories, and the changes that have been made to the house and yard, etc. I asked him to please email us pictures when he returned home. I'll get back to that in a minute...
This is our 'office', right off the front hall/entryway.
In here, I decided to go with more of an industrial vibe. The walls were painted red when we moved in, and we left them, so they just seemed to lean toward a more industrial look.
The red walls definitely aren't for the faint of heart (although they're not as bright as they seem in these photos!) I've liked them, but it's time for a change, so we're thinking of painting them a gray. It should mesh well with all of the galvanized metal I've collected!
So...here is 1 of the pics he emailed us...our office in 1957! He said they called it the 'library' and used it as their family room, which is so funny, since this room is so tiny! He said the much bigger living room was used only for 'formal' occasions-so here are 2 parents, 2 kids, a dog, and all that furniture crammed into this little room! I LOVE that we now have this momento-it's so special, and I'm grateful that he shared it with us!
I'll show the other side of the office next time...have a wonderful day!

first, wow your collection is just amazing, love the room, second- how much fun to have him stop by and then send photos!! How wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteHow sweet that you let him come in and then the tears. I drive by my childhood home every once in awhile and wish someone would be outside. I would love to go back in and see my room.
ReplyDeleteLove the red walls. We used to have raspberry walls.......shocking but I like them.
I live in Ohio as well. Where do you live. We live in Granville.
Love love your home.
Hi Susan, thanks for your lovely comment on my blog. I just looked through yours, and I think it's amazing! You are so talented.....your home is so beautifully done up!
ReplyDeleteP.s. I'm following you via GFC, xx
ReplyDeleteI love the red walls. I have a small accent area with red. The room looks great. Very cool to have that photo!
ReplyDeleteYour built-ins are just beautiful & I love the old photograph. I love your style as well:)!
ReplyDeleteJen
oh my gosh, that's so cool! I love her pants too! It was very sweet of you to invite him inside, I know how much that can mean to a person. When I was married to my ex-husband I did some genealogy for his dad's side of the family which he knew nothing about. I found the place where his dad had grown up and I was invited inside too, it was a very nice gesture.
ReplyDeleteYour office looks so cool too! Love it all and can't wait to see the rest of the room... and I think a grey wall will look great in there!
Tania
Wow, I love all your collectibles on the shelves. It was so sweet of you to invite him inside. Cool old photo.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Lorilee
How cool!! I would so love to see photos of my house way back when it was first built and along the way as it has been renovated and redecorated. Lucky girl!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a wonderful post! I wish that I could be invited in to see my childhood homes. How kind of you to let him relive some precious memories from the past and now you have a wonderful pic to keep in your home's memory book.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Susan and Bentley
I actually like the pop of red in your office with the black and industrial items, but also understand when it's time for a change. Whatever you decide, your style and decorating is perfect for an office. So many unique, interesting, and wonderful collections on your shelves. That old picture is priceless!!
ReplyDeleteMary Alice
This is such a neat story! When we tore down a wall that covered a fireplace we found a note tacked to the wall that said "This was a good home" and it was signed by the homeowners son who sold it to us. I framed it because I couldn't agree more.
ReplyDeleteLove how you have styled the shelves. You have a great inventory in which to style photos!
Kim@reposhture.blogspot.com
What a great story! We call our office the library as well : o )
ReplyDeleteLovely! I like your collections all out on display!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your feature at Vintage Inspiration... I love your blog. This post about your office is so charming with that old photograph from the 1950s
ReplyDeleteI must love junk too, because I love your shelves!
ReplyDeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much for your kind comment and of course you prayers. I am so grateful, and touched that you would come to me a complete stranger and offer such a kindness.
Thank you again,
Elizabeth
Fantastic story and I love the room! The window treatment and shelf styling is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteNeat story, very cool that he followed up and sent you this photos! I like your collection!! Also from Ohio!!
ReplyDeleteLove all your vintage stuff, looks great on your shelves! What a great story, it's always fun to find out new things about the place you call home! The 85 year old son of the builder of the Queen Anne farmhouse we lived in in NC came by our house and told us all about growing up there and then brought us a photo of it from back in the early 1900's. I'm your newest follower and would love for you to visit me!
ReplyDeleteRebecca
That is soooo cool that you got a photo from him!! Love their outfits!! and of course I love your office! Great collections!
ReplyDeletePolly
This is great! What a beautiful space, well done!
ReplyDelete-Jacque@theDIYvillage.com
Your office is filled with some wonderful vintage treasures and they are displayed so wonderfully. Stopping by from Debbiedoos.
ReplyDeleteYou have a great style! I've had red walls before and I love them, but I also understand when it's time to make a change. Gray would be nice with what you've already done. The office looks great and it's probably a wonderful place to work OR relax in! I love that you were able to connect with somebody who grew up in the house--terrific story! I found your blog through Debbiedoo's, too!
ReplyDeleteHi Susan! This is Melissa @ daisymaebelle.com. I am a fellow partier over at the "newbie" party! I love your galvanized metal collection! I love an industrial look! As for the picture, how special! What a gift to know something of the history of your home!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you came by Lake Cottage Dreams. The minute I clicked on your site and saw the dress form and vintage fan I knew we were destined to be bloggin' buds. Love all your vintage treasures. Such a beautiful space.
ReplyDeletethis is a great room! love everything about it!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful. Love everything about it.
ReplyDeleteYou were so kind to allow him to come in! I really love your red, but the grey will be lovely as well. Your collections are amazing!
ReplyDeleteImagine getting a photo of your office (their library). So great. I found you from Debbie Doo's. I am putting a link on my blog list so I find you again.
ReplyDeleteVisiting from the Newbie party.
ReplyDeleteLoved the story and the pics. How crazy not to use the "formal" room for everyday life but that's probably how it was back then
I remember when I was young we did not use my parents living room very much either! It was not really to "live in " ha ha. Tv watching was either in my mom's bedroom or later in the 'gameroom' downstairs. Playing with toys was always in our bedrooms ...
Wow thanks for linking up .. I love your style .. And how neat is that to get that picture..

ReplyDeleteVery inspiring!
I wandered over here from another blog and had to say 'hi' because I noticed you are from Ohio, too. We are actually headed your way this weekend to visit Amish country for the day. My husband is craving Coblentz chocolate. :)
ReplyDeleteYour blog is beautiful! I will be stop back again!

I so love this post because the house my dad built and that I grew up in here in South Florida, and which I lived in from the time I was three until I was 20 is up for sale again. It has been so changed and updated that I feel the soul has been removed from it. I love that you still have the bookcases and the bones left from when the gentleman lived there. My dad once took us back to our old house in MI on a summer vacation and knocked on the door and asked if we could come in and see it. The people obliged and it was so cool to see where we had lived when I was born. Thanks for sharing this and for opening your home to the past. I am in love with that photo. Amazing that he had it.
ReplyDeleteLiz
That is an amazing story. I love your style. I have often passed by the big old house where I grew up with my grandparents wanting to go in. Hasn't happened yet. Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeleteHow fun! It's cool he sent you the picture. Our neighbor grew up in the house we live in now. He has promised us pictures, but we're still waiting. I'm looking forward to seeing the differences.
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible story and what a great picture he shared with you!! I absolutely LOVE all of the black and white! You did a fantastic job!!!! Thank you for linking up to Transformation Tuesday at The Ironstone Nest! Please come back! XO Laura
ReplyDeleteThat is so neat to have that pic! It reminds me of a Donna Reed moment. I love the way you decorate! Thank you so much for linking this up to Rustic Restorations Weekend!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great Story about the Man who used to live in the House coming for a visit & Sharing Images of how it was back in the day... especially since you have a Passion for Vintage Era objects & Styling! I Love this Room, and I actually like the Bold Red Wall. We purchased a Historic Home which is nearly 100 years old & has a lot of local History, so Interesting to find out more about it as folks Share and we get a sense of it's Essence and those who once lived in and Loved it too. Part of our Rooms were painted a Bold Pumpkin & we decided to leave them... the G-Kids Bedroom is still in that shade and they adore the color... because in the Evening it glows like the inside of a Jack-O-Lantern and they think that's pretty Cool. The exterior trim is in even Bolder Caribbean Blue & Turquoise {since the house itself is Rock & Railroad Ties} and we decided to keep those original colors as well... kinda grew on us & now we wouldn't Imagine it any other colors.

Hi Susan, wow I love the office. I think the red walls are wonderful, but then I love red. I know sometimes you are ready for a change. You have a fabulous collection and I would love to see some more close up pics. The old photo is a treasure. So fun to have him stop by and sweet of you to invite him in. I know that I would love to go back into the house that I grew up in. I always think of that song, "The House That Built Me", by Amanda Lambert. I lived in it my entire life until I left for college. I was the youngest child so my parents sold it after I married. Thanks so much for sharing with Share Your Cup.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Jann
How wonderful! My daughter is in California visiting with her husband's family - a wedding there - I told her I wish that she were near where I grew up - I can see it in my mind and know it has to have changed a lot!
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,
Kathy
What a wonderful story! Isn't it amazing to think that what seems like a tiny space to us once served as the "family" space? No doubt we would do well to return to some of those ideas. I'm so glad you have photos of your house when it was home to another family!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous office! I had to go back and look again so I didn't miss anything. Love all the signs and baskets. It's great that you met a previous resident and that now you have this picture. Thanks for linking to the Open House party.
ReplyDeleteOh how wonderful to have the picture from so long ago...from old owners of the home! That is so special!! And it's hardly changed much at all!
ReplyDeleteAnd I love what you've done to the room, looks amazing
Debbie :)
It is a touching story as well and the office space you posted here is really nice. It looks so amazing and you can work easy at the same time you can relax too. Thanks for sharing your blog to us it is fun to be with.
ReplyDeleteI do think the grey would be lovely on the walls. There are so many fun and interesting things to like in your rooms! That is awesome you have some history on your house! We found a letter in the attic of this house. It was written by the Great Granddaughter of the people that had lived here years ago. A couple owned the house between the grandparents and us, but the couple didn't do anything to the house except trash it and let it go to foreclosure. The letter is a true gem. The lady that lived here came to The States on the sister ship of the Lusitania. The internet being the wonderful place it is, I found the Great Granddaughter on Facebook. We have shared some stories. It is so neat. Abby and her family have an open invitation if they are ever back this way. Oh how fun!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are really great items that do not deserve to be called junk! Hats off to this completely creative and unique office space!
