Restyled Kitchen Shelves

I want to give a big 'thank you' to all of you that left such sweet comments regarding our shop! (I posted about our grand reopening here.)
I wish that all of you lived close enough to visit us! :)

Now onto my kitchen...even though I still liked the vignettes on my kitchen shelves, they had been that way for awhile and it was time for a change.  I know that you can relate!
They had more of a black and white theme going, and I wanted to take them to a warmer, more farmhouse-style look.
This is what they looked like before...

We got these shelves at Ikea a number of years ago when I was into a more industrial vibe.  If I were to choose now I'd probably go with white shelving, but that's ok because the stainless steel gives a nice contrast to the more rustic accessories that they're now combined with.

All of the things that I used for this 'redo' I already had on hand.  I just shopped my house for the new look!

I started by hanging this fun wooden sign.  I got this a few years ago at a local shop.

Then for the top shelf I borrowed some items from  my barn wood cabinet in the dining room.
An ironstone tureen with a plant...

...a marmalade jar filled with forks, and some small baking tins.

Next I layered a couple of bread boards against the wall...

...then stacked some more little ironstone pieces taken from my dining room.

For the bottom shelf I topped a small wicker 'suitcase' with a pile of napkins...

...and moved 3 of the 4 canisters that were on the top shelf to the bottom.

My mom got these for me years ago and I love them!  They have the words in French on the back.

Here's a look at the completed shelves...

I was rummaging around in my basement for something to hang beside the shelves, and I found this vintage floral picture.  I like the soft colors and the white frame.

Our kitchen is so tiny that we have no counter space for our microwave. I took this wooden table from our shop awhile ago, and it serves as a microwave cart.

I added an old wicker trunk that I got at the flea market to the bottom shelf of the table.

I have a weakness for these trunks, and this one's my favorite from my collection.  It looks great plus I'll use it for storage, which is a bonus in our small kitchen!

I think that I accomplished the overall look that I was going for...

...and my newly styled shelves make me happy!  (Plus it didn't cost anything :)

Saturday Spotlight: Lori from Notforgotten Farm

Hi, everyone!   Kris from Junk Chic Cottage and I wanted to do a regular feature on our blogs, something unique that hasn't been done before.   So we came up with an idea to 'spotlight the real life behind the blogger' in a more personal way.

There is so much talent and inspiration in blogland, and we thought it would be fun to bring you a closer look at the person behind the blog.

Today I'm pleased to introduce you to Lori at Notforgotten Farm.  I came across Lori's blog fairly recently, and was smitten! When I read her post on her latest finds and saw that they were some of my favorite things (a marmalade jar, ironstone tureen, whisk brooms and feed sacks among them) I knew she was a kindred spirit!  I also adore seeing the pics of the sweet animals on her farm, and you have to see her newly finished sewing room-I love it, and I don't even remotely sew! Hello Folks!

I'm Lori ~ 

I create things with needle and thread, wool, linen & cotton

and

~ clay, paint and paper ~

I have designed patterns professionaly for cross stitch, punch needle, wool appliqué & rug hooking for over 20 years ~ my work has been published in the Wool Street Journal, Mercantile Gatherings magazine, Early American Life magazine, Primitive Quilts and Projects magazine, Just Cross Stitch magazine, Country Home magazine, Country Sampler magazine and most recently I have become an author with Kansas City Star Books.

~ I began this journey by creating mohair bears, 

primitive dolls and stitcheries back in the late 1980's.

I live on an 84 acre farm in Virginia that I share with my husband Peter, 

daughter Hannah

 and our many farm-friends…

~ together we raise chickens, donkeys, sheep ~ peacocks, guinea fowl and ducks.

We are 'owned' by a Black Lab/Beagle mix named Lazy, and a 218lb Great Pyrenees named Buddy who are always ready to greet you at our farm shop here on the property ~ 

(( barn cats, kittens & opossums are always welcomed here as well! ))

We love to work here on our old farmhouse, bringing it back to it's former glory 

while making a comfortable home for our friends & family ~ 

I decorate with pieces of my folk art & textile art and love to incorporate vintage, 

antique & primitive into my decor….I love anything that reminds me of the garden or Nature too.

'Home Sweet Home' Grand Reopening

Hi, everyone!  As many of you know, my mom and I own a little shop called 'Home Sweet Home.'
We're open on Fridays and Saturdays, and close for January and February to visit my sister and family in Arizona and just to take a winter break.
Last Saturday, March 1st, we had a Grand Reopening and were warmly welcomed back!
I thought I would share some pictures of the newly freshened up shop (even though a lot of these items have sold-we feel so blessed!)

We have amazing candles made for us by a local girl...we can barely keep them in stock!!
