Room Reveal: Why So Blue? Part 1

Hi, everyone! Today I'm going to show you a room that I've never shown on my blog before!
We have a small room upstairs that I've used sporadically as my studio for making jewelry and as a 'reading room'...when it's not used as a dumping ground, that is!  I don't know if you have a room like that...the one that you toss things into when company is coming or where you just throw things that you don't know where to put yet...then it turns into a hoarders haven!  Well, it had gotten really bad again, so I finally decided to clean it up.

These are the 2 pieces that this room started with...a big 'chair and a half' that's great for lounging and reading (it's got a red floral pattern so I covered it with a white chenille bedspread) and an old weathered barn wood trunk used as a 'coffee table'...

I decided to do an experiment of sorts, and go in a totally different direction from my normal neutral color palette.
It all started with this...

Remember this blue wooden tray that I got a couple of months ago? The first blue thing I ever bought! (I posted about it here.)  I used it as a starting point and began adding more 'blue' to this room.  This is a first, and quite a big change for me!

I lined the tray with a piece of grain sack, then added some blue-colored decorating books, a chippy watering can and some fabric pumpkins that I got at an antique mall (one on an old first-aid box)...

Then I added some blue pillows to the chair. My mom gave me the smaller ticking one, the Postes one I just bought on my trip to Columbus (I posted about it here), and the large one is a pillow that I already had-I just covered it with a piece of ticking fabric and pinned it in the back.  How's that for a simple DIY project? :)

I just found this blue shutter-perfect for the small wall space beside the chair.  I hung a grapevine wreath with a strip of ticking from it.

As you can see, behind the chair is a great blank canvas of wall space!  I'm just waiting to find something fabulous or to get an inspired idea for it.  I've got some thoughts, but not quite sure yet.
I bought the little 'bus' sign last week at my friend Lori's shop, and set it in the window.

Well, that's the first part of this little room reveal! What do you think of my 'blue room' experiment so far? It's very different for me, but I'm liking the change-for now. ;)
I've got lots more to show you in here, so stay tuned!

Thanks so much for stopping by, and have a wonderful day!

  1. Blue and white has to be a favorite of mine...I never get tired of it. To me, blue is a neutral because it goes with everything, okay maybe neutral is the wrong word. But I love the touches of blue you've been experimenting with, Susan.

  15. I love this space. I have a office that is the same way. Half office, half dump the clutter. I am inspired now to do something with it. I have been on a week off of the blog world due to lots of time with my Londyn this week. Feels good to catch up. I also only lasted ten days with our new puppy and decided the timing wasnt right. While I was sad to give Porter up it was the best choice for me. Have a great day!

    1. Oh, trust me, Khammany-I didn't show the rest of the room before I cleaned it up. You literally could hardly walk in there for all the stuff on the floor! Just keepin' it real :)

  19. Love it! The pretty bits of blue go so nicely with all your neutrals. I love the big comfy chair and now I'm kicking myself for not buying a white chenille throw at a recent vintage sale. It would have been perfect for an ugly but comfy chair in our basement TV area. I'll have to keep looking.
