A Lavabo, a Door, and Angel Wings

Hi, everyone!  I've been tweaking our master bedroom and thought I'd show you a restyled corner.

I've always loved these pretty European 'sinks' but didn't really know what they were.  Their official title is lavabo (fancy!) and a quick web search produced this definition:

lavabo (ləˈveɪbəʊ)
npl -boes or -bos
1. (Ecclesiastical Terms)
a. the ritual washing of the celebrant's hands after the offertory at Mass
b. (as modifier): lavabo basinlavabo towel.
2. (Furniture) another name for washbasin
3. (Roman Catholic Church) a trough for washing in a convent or monastery
[C19: from Latin: I shall wash, the opening of Psalm 26:6]

Interesting!

I came across this one while out of town at least 6 months ago and was smitten.  I've always wanted one, so I splurged a bit and treated myself.
But this baby is SOO heavy and I wasn't sure where I wanted to hang it, so it's been sitting on the floor neglected.
When I was messing around with the top of this vintage dresser beside our bed, I got the idea to lean it on top.  (Keith wasn't home and I could barely lift the thing!)

I filled it with dried lavender to really make it pop, and I love the results! (Plus it smells so good :)

Next I leaned a stenciled door beside it to add some height.

I've had this door hung in a few different places and it's still one of my favorite finds!

I placed a chippy metal tray in front of the door and stacked some grain sacks on it.

I like the soft texture that they add.

I've had this lamp for many many years, and you'll never guess where I got it!  Walmart, of all places!  It looks a lot like one that I admired in the Pottery Barn catalog back then, for a fraction of the price.

The lamp was already on the dresser and I left it there. (As I read in bed every single night, a bedside lamp is essential!)

I like to throw in a little 'bling' sometimes to contrast with the 'rustic.'

I've had these fun glittery angel wings for awhile and hadn't settled on a place to hang them.

I thought that they'd be a pretty addition to the wall adjacent to the dresser...more bling!

They're so sparkly when the sun hits them!

The last thing I did was place this little bench under the window.

I put an old wooden box on the bottom shelf...

...and topped it with a vintage wire basket filled with a couple of pillows.

And that's my 'new' bedroom corner!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Have a fantastic day :)

  1. I'm very intrigued by the lavabo since I'm a "cradle Catholic" and love discovering vintage finds relating to my faith! I love what you've done with it. And the lamp, so romantic. I've actually found some exceptional things at Wal-Mart over the years, you just need to know where to look:)

  32. My Mommie always said to me to wash my hands! I have to tell you if I had Lavado she never would of had to tell me again. Where ever did you find it? I swear I need to move to Ohio! I also love that door and would never be able to part with it, e.ver! I need to buy myself some dried lavender, I love. I never go to sleep at night without putting a drop of lavender oil on my pillow and 2 drops of the bottom of each foot, it is know to be a sleep aid! Have a great 4th!

  33. Cute! I had never heard of that kind of sink before. I might want to give it a base to be mounted on, maybe of wood painted white and chipped. I love the angel wings! I might spray paint them a steel grey or maybe bright white.

  34. Oh my gosh!! I LOVE what you've done to the corner of your bedroom. I saw one of those sinks last year, and passed it up. Went back to get it and it was gone...ugh. I could have cried!! Everything looks just perfect, Susan. I wouldn't change a thing! Looks very European...trust me...I've been over there! Great job!!!
    Have a super holiday weekend.
